The Crucial Role of Graphic Design Skills in our Mint + Mabel Murals

Mural art has the power to transform dull walls into captivating works of art. While many associate mural creation with illustration and fine art, there's a hidden hero behind our Mint + Mabel murals: graphic design. Erin and Hattie, co-founders of Mint + Mabel, have twenty years of combined experience in graphic design and illustration and in this article we explore why our graphic design experience is important in our murals.

Planning and Conceptualisation

Before any mural takes shape on a wall, meticulous planning and conceptualisation are essential. This is where we feel our graphic design experience really helps. We know how to translate ideas into visual concepts, considering factors like composition, colour theory, and the overall message. A well-thought-out concept is the foundation of a successful mural.

Typography and Text Integration

Murals can include text or typography, conveying powerful messages or quotes. As graphic designers with experience in book design and branding we have a deep understanding of typography, which is crucial for legibility, style, and integration within the mural. Whether it's a motivational quote or an educational message, the text must use an appropriate font and style that works well with the mural theme. We also make murals with wooden letters to add texture.

Colour Theory

Colour is a fundamental element of mural art. We use our distinct Mint + Mabel colour palette for many of our murals but can work with the client to create bespoke murals in different colours that engage and evoke emotions. We can use colour palettes that not only catch the eye but also convey the desired mood and message of the mural. The Mint + Mabel colour palette is made up of shades which were carefully selected to be vibrant whilst keeping a natural, earthy feel to our work which reflects our love of nature.

Client Collaboration

Many mural projects are commissioned by clients with specific objectives and themes in mind. We are experienced in collaborating with clients, interpreting their vision, and incorporating feedback into the design by having meetings both in person and through video calls. Effective communication is key to delivering a mural that aligns with the client's goals.

Conclusion

Mural creation is a harmonious blend of artistic vision and graphic design skills. These skills are the unsung heroes that ensure a mural not only looks visually stunning but also effectively communicates its message. From planning and scaling to colour theory and typography, graphic designers bring a wealth of expertise to the world of mural art.
